This unique island off the coast of Sweden, in the Baltic Sea, has something for everyone. Beautiful natural scenery, remarkable history and unique local flavours are just some of the draws of this island. Dotted around the island you’ll find 92 medieval churches, dating back to between the 12th and the 15th century.
And if you think parts of Gotland look familiar to you, that is certainly possible as the TV series Pippi Longstocking was filmed on the island and you can visit the real house from the series at Kneippbyn resort. The island is well worth a visit any time of year but Gotland comes alive particularly during summer, when temperatures hover around the 20°C mark, and the waters are at their most bathing-friendly.
The main town on Gotland is a Viking-era wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town of Visby has everything you could want for your vacation, history, nature, culture, good food and a beach to relax on. Visby is a well-preserved medieval Hanseatic town, dating back to the 12th century. The 3.5 kilometre wall around the town centre still has many of its original towers from the 1200s.
The town’s excellent restaurants, bars and cosy cafés are a foodie’s heaven. Keep an eye out for some delicious homemade goods, such as the island’s traditional saffron pancake with berries and cream. And the amount of lambs on Gotland mean you’ll find lamb dishes served in many restaurants, along with tasty local sausages, venison and more.
Voted as the best beach in the Nordics, this 3 kilometre beach offers a variety of activities, restaurants and accommodations for all, as well as the best After Beach parties on the island. Tofta beach, just south of Visby, has plenty to do for those who want to be active throughout the day, such as padel tennis, beach volleyball, stand up paddling and skate boarding.
If you’d rather take it slow, you can spend your day relaxing on the beach, enjoying some time in one of the beach club’s jacuzzies or breath your way through a yoga class. Along with the beach bar, Tofta has several great cafés and restaurants, including Trattoria Bella and Lilo Surfcafé. Whether you prefer camping or staying in a hotel, apartment, cottage or bed & breakfast, Tofta has the best places to rest your head.
