Tallinn is one of Europe’s coronavirus-safest Christmas destinations

Tallinn Christmas Market Train

It’s October, time to make those holiday plans! Every year, around this time, European Best Destinations publishes a list of the best Christmas markets in Europe. This year, they went for a different, more fitting angle: The Covid 19 Safest Christmas Destinations.

In 2019, Tallinn’s Christmas market was named the best in Europe. This year, Estonia’s capital is one of the safest places to visit a Christmas Market, especially if you want a snowy experience. With it’s family atmosphere, magical illuminations, traditional and artisanal products and delicious local delicacies, this market is a favourite wintry destination.

This year, Tallinn’s Christmas Market is themed with hearts. With heart-shaped ornaments in the Christmas tree in the center of Raekoja (Town Hall) Square and on the stage. Heart-shaped decorations were chosen to decorate the Christmas Market for a number of reasons. The heart is a symbol of love, and Christmas is probably one of the most heartfelt holidays in general. But also Tallinn Old Town, the venue of the Tallinn Christmas Market, is heart-shaped when viewed from the air! Tallinn’s Christmas Market will be open from 15 November 2020 till 5 January 2021 and is only a 5 minute walk from Toompea Castle, stop 2 on the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour.

Tallinn is also one of the safest destinations for Christmas holidays. Estonia has so far recorded 18 times fewer severe cases of Covid-19 per million inhabitants than the most affected European countries. Hospitals have never been overcrowded and the virus has done much less damage than elsewhere in Europe. Estonia was able to resume a "normal" life while applying measures of social distancing, protection (masks) and the provision of hydro alcoholic gels in public spaces much quicker than other countries on the continent. An updated list of countries for which entry to Estonia is subject to limitations is available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

European Best Destinations works to stimulate culture and tourism in Europe. In partnership with tourism offices and the EDEN Network they promote a better understanding of the wealth, diversity and quality of European destinations.
